For homebuilder, it’s a time for opportunity When Robert Thorne was growing up, his Air Force pilot father moved the family of six from base to base, and they lived in military housing at home and abroad. “We never had wall-to-wall carpeting,” said Thorne, 58. “My mom sewed it together, and we took it with us.” The family settled down in 1969 and bought their first home in Riverside for $25,000. Thorne was 17. “I remember walking the slab when they were laying it out; I helped pick out the options,” he said, “and I knew then I wanted to build homes.
